음향 기기의 주관적 평가엔 대체 어떠한 기준을 써야 할까요??
예전 모 사이트의 모님께서는 Ken C. Pohlmann氏가 그의 저서인

ITU-R BS.1116-1을 써야 한다고 해야 했으니
그걸 반드시 적용해야 하고, 그렇게 하지 않은 모든 평가 실험들은

Pohlmann氏는 분명 자신이 했던 실험은 100% 유효 하다고 했지요:

그리고 분명 그의 저서엔 ITU-R BS.1116-1이
음향기기간의 평가를 위함이 아닌,
'고음질 음향 코덱'의 평가를 위해 인용되어 있습니다.
아무튼 ITU-R BS.1116-1은 대체 뭘 위함인지,
그 기준안의 목적성을 알아보지요.
맨 첫째장, 1장 일반론의 1.1 유효 범위에서:
"This Recommendation is intended for use in the assessment of systems which introduce impairments so small as to be undetectable without rigorous control of the experimental conditions and appropriate statistical analysis. If used for systems that introduce relatively large and easily detectable impairments, it leads to excessive expenditure of time and effort and may also lead to less reliable results than a simpler test..." p.1
"이 기준안은 실험 조건과 적절한 통계적 분석의 엄격한 제어 없이는 검지할 수 없을 정도로 적은 규모의 음질 열화를 보이는 시스템들의 평가에 쓰일 목적으로 만들어 졌습니다. 만일 쉽게 검지할 수 있을 정도로 상대적으로 큰 규모의 음질 열화를 보이는 시스템들의 비교에 쓰인다면, 과도한 시간의 낭비와 더불어 간단한 실험보다도 신뢰성이 떨어지는 실험 결과를 초래할 지도 모릅니다..." p.1

'청취자의 후심사를 위한 통계적 고려' 中
1. 전문 청취자의 평가에서:
"It should be remembered that the recommendations which are the subject of this text are concerned exclusively with small impairments. If it turns out, for whatever reason, that many “large” impairments were included in a test, rather than only “small” ones, then the method of post-screening applied naively as described above may lead to false or inappropriate conclusions. A “large” impairment here, means one which is relatively easy to detect, even by “non-expert” listeners." p.20

아주 *소규모의 음질 열화 수준이라면 당연히(!)

ITU-R BS.1116-1 적용해야 겠지만서도,
통상, 음향 기기들은 기계적 구성부터가 제 각각
천차만별이며, 변인 통제가 되지 않은 조건에서
"비전문" 청취자도 그 소리의 차이를 쉽게 검지할 수 있으므로
충분히 "대규모" 음질 열화의 존재를 전제 가능합니다..
(특히 mp3p같은 휴대용 기기엔 더더욱 그렇지요)
따라서 ITU-R BS.1116-1은 통상의 조건에서 적절치 못한
결론을 낼 수 있으므로 음향 기기의 주관적 평가엔 적합하지
않다고 할 수 있겠습니다.
그렇다면 어떤 기준안을 써야 하는가?

무언가 눈에 띄는 기준안이 보이지 않으십니까?
네, '음질의 주관적 평가를 위한 기본 방법'인 ITU-R BS.1284-1입니다:
"This Recommendation is intended as a guide to the general assessment of sound quality. It is based
on Recommendation ITU-R BS.1116 – Methods for the subjective assessment of small impairments
in audio systems including multichannel sound systems. However, the requirements of Recommendation
ITU-R BS.1116 are stringent, being intended for the assessment of small impairments. More
general assessments usually involve larger differences and therefore do not usually need such close
control of the test parameters..." p.1
"이 기준안은 음질의 기본 평가를 안내하기 위해 만들어 졌습니다. 비록 ITU-R BS.1116에 기초하긴 합니다만, BS.1116은 규모가 작은 음질 열화의 평가에만 쓰이도록 엄격하게 기준 되어 있습니다. 통상적인 평가 시에는 보통 더 큰 규모의 음질 열화가 발생하므로 그렇게 미세한 실험 수치의 제어는 필요치 않지요..." p.1
어차피 ITU-R BS.1284-1을 쓰려면 그 모체인
ITU-R BS.1116-1을 어느 정도 참고하지 않으면
안되긴 합니다만, 결국 음향 기기의 주관적 평가를
위한 적절한 기준안의 선택은 모님의 주장처럼 특정
기준안 하나에 강제되는 것이 아닌, 각 실험의 조건과
목적성에 따라 크게 달라지게 된다는 사실을 알 수 있습니다.
